Winter Waste – Were Talking About Air Leaks | New Gloucester Maine Homes For Sale
Warm air leaking out of your home during the winter can waste a lot of your heating dollars. One of the easiest and quickest things you can do to prevent this is to caulk, seal and weather-strip all seams, cracks and openings to the outside. First, test your home for air tightness. On a windy day, carefully hold a lit incense stick next to your windows, doors, electrical boxes, plumbing fixtures, electrical outlets, ceiling fixtures, attic hatches and other locations where there is a possible air path to the outside. If the smoke stream travels horizontally, you have located an air leak that may need attention. See the attached graphic to see where from which areas most heat is lost. The opposite holds true in the summer, when hot air can leak in.

Homeowners: Protect Your Investment – Roof Snow Removal

Because it is usually your most valuable investment, I am hoping that you want to take care of your home. At this time of year, I like to send out a reminder about all the beautiful snow that may be stacked up on your rooftop. To remove this excess weight from the roof, and to prolong the life of their roof shingles, many people will use a roof rake to remove as much snow as possible. Aluminum rakes seem to be the best choice for do-it-yourself homeowners because they are lightweight and quite sturdy. For many people, I would recommend hiring a professional maintenance person to do this job for you, especially if you have a two or three-story home. Also, this applies to seasonal or vacation properties Call me if you need the name of someone in our area to help you. 207-784-2525
