Make Your Maine Move Easier!

Make your Maine move easier:

If you’re getting ready to move, here’s a helpful list of companies you will want to call two weeks before your move-date.  Ask them to set dates to end your service at your old place and subscribe to utilities at your new place. Much easier to do this when not under pressure, so try not to wait to the last minute. These utilities usually include:

  • Electric
  • Water
  • Gas
  • Telephone
  • Cable and internet
  • Sewer
  • Postal service
  • Trash collection
  • Home care service providers (lawn care, snow removal, etc.)

I suggest this list as a guide; feel free to tailor it to fit your specific needs.

Do you need a quick reminder of spring, which is — hard to believe —right around the corner? Maybe it’s time to update your landscaping projects?

Check out the 250-acre botanical garden in Boothbay. Free admission from now through March. They offer some great workshops about all things gardening, can suggest some wonderful-sounding “garden getaway” travel packages, and offer a yummy-sounding Kitchen Garden Series Dinners, prepared by visiting guest chefs from Maine. To check out their class schedule and to make reservations for the dinners, call 633-4333 or go to www.mainegardens.org.

Camden Winterfest – January 29, 2010

Here is a fun event for kids of all ages: Camden Winterfest, on Saturday, Jan. 29 ,in Camden. Take a little jaunt up the coast with or without snow! An excellent family event. Horse and wagon rides are offered free of charge. A merry band of culinary volunteers will serve a variety of delicious hot soups donated by local restaurants, light snacks, and their “world-famous” Arctic Grilled Cheese Sandwich. The main attraction of Winterfest is the Community Ice Carving Event. Community members transform ordinary blocks of ice into crystalline ice sculptures using traditional tools of the ice-carving artisan. Presented by The Camden Public Library. For more info, call 236-3440.

National Flood Insurance Program

I’d like to share some good news with home owners and potential buyers about the National Flood Insurance Program.  Congress last week unanimously approved a one-year extension, until Sept. 30, 2011. Earlier in 2010 the NFIP had lapsed. A long-term extension was a top legislative priority for the National Association of Realtors. The bill now heads to President Obama for his signature as soon as next week.
The NFIP is a Federal program enabling property owners in participating communities to purchase insurance protection against losses from flooding. This insurance is designed to provide an insurance alternative to disaster assistance to meet the escalating costs of repairing damage to buildings and their contents caused by floods.
Participation in the NFIP is based on an agreement between local communities and the federal government that states if a community will adopt and enforce a floodplain management ordinance to reduce future flood risks to new construction in Special Flood Hazard Areas, the Federal Government will make flood insurance available within the community as a financial protection against flood losses.

Kitchens: It’s a tried and true theory

Your kitchen can make or break a buyer’s decision to buy your house or not.
Buyers tend to have less interest in buying a home with outdated kitchens, whether they cook or not, and a well-done kitchen absolutely can sway a buyer’s decision. Savvy shoppers know the cost of a kitchen remodel keeps escalating.
Many kitchens don’t have to be gutted to work and look better. A few tweaks often can make it more enticing, such as:
  • Go simple! Less cabinet ornamentation
  • You don’t need granite! An attractive man-made stone countertop in a new white-white
  • Use glass tiles! For example, a luminescent glass-tiled focal wall
  • Go large! A floor tiled with 24-by-24-inch porcelain squares is modern and dramatic
  • Modernize! Energy-efficient LED lamps in swank fixtures
  • Think universal! For the aging population, having everything in easy reach is a plus
  • Zones! Besides separate cooking, prepping, cleaning, and eating stations, kid areas are useful
My job is to help educate buyers about the latest trends that make sense for their lifestyle (and later for resale), and to help sellers know which changes attract the widest group of buyers.

Great News For Maine Waterfront Home Buyers

Congress has passed a bill extending the Homebuyer Tax Credit closing deadline to September 30, 2010.  This is a huge win for homebuyers, and the National Association of Realtors worked closely with members of Congress to make it happen.

The extension applies only to transactions that had ratified contracts in place as of April 30, 2010, and have not yet closed.  There will be no gap between June 30 and the date the President signs the bill into law.

Additionally, Congress has extended the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) through September 30th.  The bill is retroactive and will cover the lapse period from June 1, 2010, to the date the law is enacted.  NAR will continue to work with Congress on the NFIP Reform bill.

For additional information on both the tax credit deadline and the NFIP, visit Realtor.org/Government_Affairs.
